Facts and questions about Sugaring

Sugaring facts you need to know before receiving your treatment

Some cool Facts about Sugaring you should know!

About our Sugaring Hybrid Technique

There are two methods of sugaring: “Hand Sugaring” and “Squeeze & Strip” method. Hand sugaring is the most natural and ancient way of hair removal. Strip sugaring sees a thin layer of sugar paste being applied with a spatula. A cloth is then placed over the paste before being removed. At Sugarwaxed, we hand sugar the traditional, all the way in order to make sure no hair is left behind or broken.

Hand sugaring is not only the most sanitary and meticulous way of sugaring, it is also an art. Only the best hair removal specialist use this method.

Honestly, it depends on the person. The first time is the hardest, and it only gets easier from there. On repeated visits, within 4-5 weeks the hair follicles will be smaller and the bulbs weaker, so they’ll come out smoother each time.

Our secret formulation has zero wax resin and it is made only with sugar, lemon and water. Thus it is 100% water soluble, organic and gentle to the skin. No irritations, burns or bumps. Only smooth hair-free skin for both women and men.

No in our opinion it’s much better!

The benefits of sugaring over waxing:
It’s more hygienic, lasts longer, and can be less painful if done regularly. Sugaring doesn’t cause ingrown hairs (it can actually correct them)! In addition, sugaring is a natural exfoliating treatment for the skin and can lead to permanent reduction of hair growth. We don’t understand why anyone would want to wax, either.

It’s body temperature or lukewarm, which means it can’t burn your skin.

About your Hair

Your hair should be between 3 and 5mm (length of a grain of rice) in length if you are new to sugaring. Once practiced in a regular cycle you can sugar hair even shorter than 2mm.

It is possible to become permanently hairless if being sugared correctly and regularly.

Generally, after sugaring, it can last between 4-6 weeks. Depending on the level of hair growth and how regular you sugar. This varies from one person to another and is also depending on the body area. Hair growth will not necessarily be equally distributed and hair grows at different rates.

Other factors play a role in hair growth as well, for example, your genetics, your hormones and your lifestyle. However, repeated sugaring treatments ever weaken the hair system so re-growth gets sparser with time and can even lead to permanency.

Properly extracting hair does not make it grow back thicker or darker. A hair that becomes darker and heavier – as seen on women’s facial hair generally in the upper lip and chin area, is predetermined to do so or has been prompted to change into a terminal hair by one of several factors such as, but not limited to, hormones.

Below you’ll find a diagram that includes our “zoning” standards. Remember, if you’re ever in doubt or looking for a custom job, speak with your Hair Removal Specialist (HRS).

Basic Bikini
A basic bikini will cover about 1-2 inches on the side and an inch on the top. This is the area where hair may peak through your bikini or underwear.

Extended Bikini
An extended bikini removes more hair than the simple bikini line (standard bikini). This type of sugaring is good for those who want to keep some hair down there, but want it to look neat.

About your Skin

Yes. It is safe for all skin types. All pigments and types of hair can be sugared. Our sugar paste is formulated to be gentle on all skin types and it’s hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic (which means that it doesn’t block pores).

Yes! Because our sugar paste is 100% natural and safe, it is especially good for sensitive skin or problemantic skin.

Your skin will be more sensitive after sugaring as the hair follicle openings being more vulnerable to infections.

48 Hours before & after your service Do Not:

  • Use a Tanning Bed with UV Lights
  • Spray Tan (unless you want little orange spots)
  • Exfoliate with scrubs or chemical serums
  • To reduce chances of bacterial infection, avoid pools and hot tubs for at least two days after your appointment.

24 Hours after your service Do Not:
– high rash and pustules risk –

  • Participate in activities that cause friction or sweating (including sex)
  • Use lotions, serums, or other skincare treatments
  • Use perfumed skin products or products with chemical irritants
  • Swim or use communal bathing areas
  • Refrain from touching the freshly sugared area for the first 24 hours. We carry germs on our hands and the area sugared is more susceptible to bacteria that might cause an infection.
  • Avoid tweezing, shaving and epilating between appointments

  • Exfoliate twice a week
  • Moisturise daily
  • Keep your sugaring 4-6 weeks apart

Medical experts recommend waiting for 24-48 hours after any type of bikini line hair removal. During this time period your body can be most susceptible to outside bacteria, which can potentially cause an infection. For your safety and health, it is better to abstain and your skin will thank you for getting some time to recover.

For the Mommies

Our sugar paste is 100% natural so, sure you can. As long as you’re past your first trimester in a healthy pregnancy, sugaring is safe but just note that you may be more sensitive than usual. Sugarwaxed caters to many pregnant clients but one non-negotiable requirement is that you check with your gynaecologist before your session, so please do so before requesting an appointment.

Remember to mention your pregnancy when you book in so we can better prepare your treatment. By making an appointment, Sugarwaxed will consider that you’ve taken note of all the necessary requirements and precautions.

We generally recommend waiting 1 to 3 months (natural) or 3 to 6 months (caesarean) after giving birth before popping in for a session. It is, however, entirely dependent on the method of childbirth and on your and your gynaecologist’s opinions. In most cases, once Mothers are up for it and have their doctor’s approval (written for <1 month post-natural and <3 months post-caesarean), they’re welcome to book in. Contact us for more information.

A high percentage of our clients are male, so no need to worry. We have perfected the art. We currently offer all male services including male intimate (Manzilian) sugaring.

As these topical products can make skin more susceptible to tearing and irritation, we do not recommend body sugaring unless it has been at least one month since using a retinoid or six months since using Acutane. We would highly recommend a patch test before proceeding.

Absolutely! Sugaring can actually help brighten tattoos by removing the layer of dead skin covering the tattoos.

It’s up to you. Menstruating does not affect the sugaring process, although you may be a bit more sensitive to pain. If you’d rather not reschedule, simply use a tampon during your appointment.

Do not use any lotions or oils on the day of your appointment (sugar does not like oily skin). We love exfoliating to get rid of dead skin cells and recommend you exfoliate once a week. If this has not been your routine so far make sure to exfoliate at least once prior to your appointment, but NOT the day before or day of your appointment.

  • Minimum length for first time sugaring: 5mm (length of a grain of rice).
  • Don’t moisturise on the day of your appointment.
  • Whenever possible, please wear clean, loose-fitting clothing straight after your appointment. Avoid full-on lace underwear up to 24 hours post treatment.
  • Gents: front or back torso sugaring. Please bring a long, clean cotton shirt to wear after your appointment.
  • For the ladies: we can sugar during your period. You may be more sensitive during this time of the month though.
  • If possible, exfoliate up to 24 hours before your treatment. Regular exfoliation leads to beautiful skin.

We strive to accommodate the appointment needs of our clients, and make every effort to keep on time for scheduled appointments. If your appointment time becomes inconvenient for you, we are always happy to change it if you provide us with 24 hours notice.

Clients will generally be allowed a 5-10 minute grace period. If you are late, we may not be able to complete the entire treatment. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late, your appointment may be rescheduled in order to meet the needs of those who are on time for their pre-reserved visit. If this happens it will be considered a missed appointment and 100% of the booked treatment charge will apply to your account.

Please remember that your appointment is reserved for you and only you. Thank you for your understanding.

As you can imagine, a client not turning up for their appointment can lead us into a difficult situation. As a company, we miss turnover and have a gap in our agenda. Of course, we always have the client’s best interest in mind and understand the occasional missed appointment. However should this occur regularly then the client is obliged to pay the costs of the missed appointment. A “No Show” is a client who does not show up on the appointed time, this includes coming 15 minutes late. This will be specified in your client profile.
